Toe to Hand Transfer

Toe to hand transfer is a procedure where a toe is transplanted onto the hand to replace a digit (usually a thumb, sometimes a finger), which is absent or deficient. The hand and foot are similar in many ways; hence, a toe is suitable in replacing a missing or damaged thumb, and restoring its characteristic opposable function. The surgery is done to enable adequate functioning of the hand such as grasping and pinching, which are vital in performing activities of daily living. Toe to hand transfer is a complex procedure that involves the disconnection and rejoining of many small nerves and blood vessels through microsurgery.
